The compressor looks like a belt-driven, engine-mounted, pulley-lookin’ thing that you’ve most definitely seen if you’ve spent any time under the hood. The compressor in your car is very similar.Ī plate inside (called a “wobble plate”) is rotated around a central axis, taking low-pressure air and pushing it out through a smaller hole than it came in, creating a higher pressure, higher temperature gas to go through the air condenser, making usable liquid with which to cool your sweaty pits!Īn oversimplification of course, but you get the picture! If you want more details about how a car air conditioner compressor works, check out this video. Think about it like high school chemistry class as gas is compressed, the molecules are forced closer together where they move faster, generating heat. The A/C compressor exists solely to transform low pressure, low-temperature gas to high pressure, and consequently high-temperature gas. The refrigerant you use to “recharge” your A/C needs to turn from a gas to a liquid to a gas over and over endlessly to cool you down as you drive. In order to get sweet, cold air pumping through your vents onto your sweaty brow, your air conditioning system needs to go through its processes. Arid environments - If you live in an arid environment, such as Arizona, you will probably have to do something to increase the humidity in your boa's cage. So this is a time when your boa constrictor habitat may need extra attention.Ģ. There's also less natural humidity in the winter, at least in most regions. Home heating can really dry out the air and lower humidity levels. The winter months - In the winter, most homes use artificial heat, such as a heat pump or a gas furnace. But there are two scenarios that can lower the humidity level inside a home, and inside the snake's enclosure as well.ġ. In many homes in the United States, the humidity level may be near this level already, without any extra effort. They also benefit from having fresh drinking water available at all times. Generally speaking, boa constrictors will do well in cages with a relative humidity of around 60%. This can become a problem, especially if your boa retains the "eye cap" areas of skin over its eyes. The snake will also be more likely to retain parts of the shed skin, which can build up over time. This is what you want to happen.īut when the humidity is too low, or the snake is dehydrated for some other reason, the shed will often come off in many broken pieces. A healthy snake in an ideal captive environment will normally shed its skin in one long piece (sort of like when you turn a sock inside-out and pull it from your foot), or in several large pieces. When boa constrictors are housed in environments that are too dry, the first sign is incomplete shedding. Keep an eye on how the snake sheds, and you'll find out soon enough. Of course, if you maintain a decent level of humidity in the cage year-round, and you keep fresh drinking water avaiable at all times, your boa constrictor might not need anything extra. You could even do both of these things when you boa sheds. You can provide this additional moisture in two ways - by misting the cage substrate twice a day, or by putting a "moisture box" into the cage. The overall humidity in the cage should be about 60%, with additional moisture provided whenever the snake enters a shed cycle. In my experience, boas do best when kept under the following conditions. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to maintain proper humidity levels inside a boa constrictor enclosure. This helps them stay hydrated, and it also helps them shed their skin. Like all captive snakes, boas need a certain amount of relative humidity inside their cages. That's what we are going to talk about in this section of the boa constrictor care guide. So, depending on where you live, you may have to use some form of supplemental moisture to increase the relative humidity within your pet boa's habitat. Why am I giving you this geography and taxonomy lesson? Because you need to realize that the native habitats for these snakes are more humid than many places in the United States - with the obvious exception of places like Florida. ![]() If you keep going south, into Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, you enter the range of the so-called red-tailed boa constrictor ( B. imperator) is native to parts of Mexico, Central America, and the northern-most parts of areas of South America. The so-called common boa constrictor ( B. ![]() I'll also give you some tips for maintaining the proper humidity levels for your snake. In this section of the boa constrictor care guide, we will talk about the importance of controlling humidity within you boa's habitat. © 2019, Brandon Cornett | All rights reserved Reptile care > Boa constrictors > Humidity Humidity in Your Boa Constrictor Habitat At just 5 psi, Austin forecasts 320 hp without an intercooler or 335 hp with one. Sometimes you have to use your best guess and cut and try different A/R ratios." Turbonetics' Evolution wastegate, and (optional) Duo-35 BOV complete the setup. "That picks the compressor," Austin says, but "the turbine comes from a chart we have or what I know works from our tribal knowledge. After filling in the blanks-VE and desired horsepower are two big variables-Turbonetics experts take over, dialing in the boost pressure needed to meet the goals, then looking for a "turbo map" that generates the highest efficiency in meeting them. ![]() Normally, these matches are generated after a customer fills out the worksheet on Turbonetics' website. An improved descendant of the classic TO4, it has an HP-61 compressor wheel and an 0.82 A/R turbine housing with its proprietary F1 wheel. Engineer Dave Austin's compressor match spits out a GT-K 500 turbo. Turbonetics caters to the replacement aftermarket and the hard-core competition markets. Krivickas says this unit should work for similar engines in this displacement range. Use a Precision PW46 wastegate plus a BOV. Mate the unit's 62mm compressor with a 0.58 A/R T4 tangential turbine housing that includes a 35?8-inch V-band inlet/outlet turbine housing to ease installation. He is referring to products that use steel ball bearings or old-school hydrostatic bearings (although Precision does offer roughly equivalent turbos with hydrostatic bearings at a considerable cost savings). By utilizing ceramic ball bearings, we are also able to take advantage of their excellent heat resiliency properties, eliminating the need for the liquid-cooling provisions commonly found on competitor's products," Krivickas says. "These units can handle about 20 times more thrust load than their hydrostatic bearing counterparts. Premier competition turbo maker Precision Turbo's Joe Krivickas spec'd a high-tech solution: "With 250 ci and only 5 psi to work with, we need a turbo able to move a lot of air with cool charge temps and exceptional spool-up characteristics"-namely, a PT6266B. An intercooler isn't needed if intake temperature stays under 150 degrees F. The three different available A/R ratio turbine housings are sold separately use the midrange 0.82 A/R as a starting point, and fine-tune boost response versus ultimate power with either the smaller 0.63 or larger 1.06 as needed." Symonds adds that any changes in the selection criteria or engine design might alter the turbo selection. Garrett's 53mm GT3071R (PN 700177-23) assembly meets this criteria, plus it has a ball-bearing driveshaft and water-cooled housing for optimum durability and quick spool up. "The two operating points should straddle the main efficiency island on a compressor map as closely as possible. In the midrange, you're looking at about a 15.70 lb/min airflow requirement. At 5,200 rpm, 5.50-psi intake manifold pressure and a 1.38 pressure ratio are required to achieve this flow level. That means the turbo needs to flow 27.20 lb/min to make 300 hp. The target air/fuel ratio at WOT on pump gas was 11.5:1, with a 0.46 BSFC (brake-specific fuel consumption) number. Along with our 300hp, 250ci stipulations, for the purposes of the exercise, Garrett engineer Rob Symonds assumed a 3,000-rpm midrange torque peak, a 5,200-rpm power peak, no intercooler, pump gas, and Torrance, California (near sea level) ambient conditions. For the Chevy six, we asked Garrett to do a full engineering analysis, just as if it were specing a turbo for a factory job. But it also has an aftermarket division, Turbo By Garrett, that sells through performance-oriented distributors. ![]() Industry giant Garrett supplies massive quantities of turbos for OE factory applications. ![]() ![]() You should choose materials which offer wind resistance and protection from UV rays. If you are riding high altitudes in warmer temperatures, you will still need the right clothing to protect you from the high wind shear experienced at a higher altitude. If you are doing riding in the winter, you will need to make sure you are properly insulated from the cold and wind. Wear the right clothing: The gear and apparel you wear on a high altitude ride can make or break the journey. You should always make sure your ATV is in good condition, and check the nonnegotiable aspects of tire pressure, fuel, and oil prior to a high altitude ride. A high elevation ride shouldn’t take a huge toll on your ride since ATVs are made with rugged riding in mind, but you definitely want to avoid becoming stranded at a high altitude with a dead machine. Riding in high altitudes will take a toll on your body so you always want to be in top form to take on the challenge.Ĭheck your ATV prior to the ride: An important thing in learning how to ride in high altitudes is to remember to tend to the vehicle prior to the journey. This means well rested with plenty of sleep and free from any illnesses, especially sickness impacting the lungs such as bronchitis or other upper respiratory infections. Ride in your best form: Before testing your altitude riding skills, you should make sure you are in top form physically. Make sure you take enough water with you for the climb and descent to avoid any issues. If you are properly hydrated and start experiencing these symptoms, you will know it is altitude sickness and that you need to start descending and work your way up to that higher altitude over time. There is also the fact that a lot of the symptoms of altitude sickness and dehydration are similar, such as headache, fatigue, dizziness, and upset stomach, so it is key to stay well hydrated before a ride so you can gauge if it’s dehydration or altitude sickness. The body can quickly become dehydrated since it is already working overtime to get enough oxygen and this overload may deplete hydration. Hydrate: The matter of hydration is crucial to riding in higher altitudes. It is a good idea to rest in between significant climbs in elevation to give your lungs a chance to catch up. Your lungs will be working overtime to supply you with the oxygen your body needs, and this becomes harder with every elevation climb during the ride. The reason for this is because the body requires more breaths to get the same level of oxygen at a higher altitude than at sea level. When climbing altitudes, it is a good idea to rest with every elevation climb in sets of 100 degrees. The second is to remember to pace yourself as you climb the altitude on each ride. ![]() The first is the above mentioned pacing where you start small and work your way up altitude wise on subsequent rides. Pace yourself: There are two types of pacing in learning how to ride in high altitudes. This way you work your body up to acclimating it slowly to the higher altitude. You should start with a few rides with increasing altitude on each ride. High altitude riding isn’t something to play around with. If you aren’t familiar with riding in higher altitudes and you jump right in, it can take quite a toll on you physically. You should never try to take on high altitude riding all at once. Work your way up with practice: When taking on high altitude riding, the key is to work your way up over time. If you are looking to take on this type of riding, we have a few helpful tips on how to ride in high altitudes. Since an ATV is capable of traversing a wide range of terrains and conditions, taking it up a mountain is a challenge worth accepting for the adventurous. An all-terrain vehicle is a great way to experience the outdoors in a fun and functional manner. ![]() We set our sights high with our first game, and with a small team consists of four people, this was hard.
